1. Pirates
The shallow waters were too shallow for big warships but deep enough for small pirate boats, which made the islands a favourite hideout in their day.
2. Swimming with pigs
At Big Major Cay in the Exumas, pigs swim out to meet the boats on the famous Pig Beach. Nearby you'll also find nurse sharks and iguanas. You can only get there by boat.
3. Beaches and clear water
Hundreds of cays, glassy water and even pink sand put the Bahamas on every list of the world's best beach holidays.
4. Luxury resorts
Beachfront resorts are everywhere, with Atlantis on Paradise Island the best known.
